The Bay of Islands & Northland
Sub-tropical Northland is famous for its beautiful Bay of Islands area, and Ninety Mile Beach ending in New Zealand's northernmost point, Cape Reinga, where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean merge.
The Bay of Islands comprise a game fisherman's playground, with marlin, tuna and kingfish all on offer. Sea kayaking or swimming with dolphins are also popular options amongst the many islands and coastal nooks and crannies littered throughout the region.
Spectacular walking tracks through the Waipoua Kauri Forest will see you stumble across Tane Mahuta, New Zealand's largest kauri tree, 2000 years old and with a trunk 60 feet in circumference.
Other highlights include wine trails and world class scuba diving, visits to New Zealand's original seat of power, the sleepy and picturesque coastal township of Russell, or the Waitangi National Reserve, where European settlers signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 with the native Maori tribes.
Explore the region by taking a Cape Reinga Scenic Flight, or riding the expansive sand dunes by 4WD.
