Rotorua, Taupo & the Central Plateau

The Central Plateau is home to the heart of New Zealand's geothermal activity, with Rotorua and Taupo being the main centres.

In and around the towns of Rotorua and Taupo you will find a multitude of geothermal attractions comprising bubbling boiling mud pools, hot springs, colourful silica terraces, steaming lakes and geysers. A scenic flight out to the active volcano at White Island off the coast is a truly unique experience.

Maori culture is also prominent in this part of New Zealand, with many traditional marae (meeting places) spread throughout the area, in close proximity to the geothermal sites. Traditional Maori song and dance performances are a popular visitor attraction.

As well as a multitude of live farm shows, the region is also famous for its rainbow and brown trout fishing - Taupo has long been known as the trout fishing capital of the world. The lakes and rivers are ripe for sailing, water-skiing and jet-boating, and hunting, skiing, hiking, and mountain biking are other land-based sporting options.
