Flaxmere Garden
Flaxmere Garden, in North Canterbury, is the creation of Penny Zino, and is a garden for all seasons.
It has been sculptured from simple beginnings since 1966, when a spring-fed creek inspired a vision. Over the last 20 years the garden has received extensive publicity and has recently been made a Garden of National Significance by the New Zealand Trust.
It is a large country garden, based on strong design principles, which are in tune with the river bed scenery the garden is part of. The point of difference is the vistas that have been described as art forms. Vast use of water to create a series of five ponds gives an enormous sense of peace, and ensures wonderful bird life. Heavy old bridge timbers and stone walls add to the country style.
