Terrace Downs Golf Course
Set on the natural geological terraces beneath the Southern Alps, Terrace Downs Golf Course has magnificent views overlooking the Rakaia Gorge and Canterbury plains, and back up towards Mount Hutt.
The course has 11 lakes and ponds, and together with its native trees and sublime views, a distinctly "South Island" atmosphere is all-pervading. The clubhouse is stunning, with views over almost the entire course and surrounding countryside.
The course plays long, but with wide fairways and four choices of tee markers on each hole, all golfers will be able to choose a course length to suit their game. The 10th is especially popular, as much for its panoramic views from the tee as for its golfing appeal.
Terrace Downs is also a great first stop-off point on the way from Christchurch to the famed West Coast via the scenic Arthur's Pass road or rail route, and will give you a mouth-watering taste of the type of landscapes to come on the rest of your South Island itinerary.
There is a variety of lodgings available on site should you wish to stay, with a selection of fairway chalets, purpose built villas and studios on offer.
