Hawke's Bay
Blessed with a sunny, Mediterranean-style climate, Hawke’s Bay is one of New Zealand’s warmest, driest regions, and is New Zealand’s leading producer of red wines.
A multitude of vineyards in Hawke's Bay are open for tastings, and many also have award-winning cafés or restaurants, making this region New Zealand's premier destination for food and wine. Three touring routes pass through - the Thermal Explorer Highway, Pacific Coast Highway and the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail – and for these travellers, Hawke’s Bay wine country presents an eclectic mix of visual and sensual experiences.
As if that weren’t enough, Hawke’s Bay is also known for its glorious beaches that stretch from Mahia Peninsula in the north to Porangahau in the south. Historical homesteads and quaint antique shops provide a glimpse of the pioneering spirit of Central Hawke’s Bay.
The landscapes of Hawke’s Bay begin with the high, forested Ruahine and Kaweka Ranges. From these mountains, the land steps down towards the coast, flattening out to become the Heretaunga Plains, with the twin cities of Napier and Hastings being the main population centres. As a result of being razed in the early 1930s by a massive earthquake, Napier contains a globally renowned array of 1930s Art Deco architecture. Hot Air Ballooning and golf at New Zealand's number 1 course, Cape Kidnappers, are also popular activities.
