Martinborough Vineyards

The sunny, dry climate with vines planted on free-draining, low-vigour soils results in intensely flavoured grapes and especially powerful Pinot Noirs, the variety that makes up 60% of plantings in and around Martinborough, Wairarapa.

The Wairarapa, occupying a large area in the south-eastern North Island, is New Zealand's fifth largest wine-growing region, producing some 1.7% of the national crop.

Most of the vineyards are boutique owner-operated businesses producing small quantities, however their reputation is impressive. We have focused on the Palliser vineyard, located in the small township of Martinborough. They produce 2 Pinot Noir labels recognised around the world, Palliser Estate and Pencarrow.

The Wairarapa's location just over the Rimutaka Range from Wellington make it a great day trip from the capital, unless of course you're staying locally.
