Richmond Garden

Richmond Garden is the result of a vision by its owners, John and Melanie Greenwood, to create a formal garden, and a place to enjoy peace and tranquillity in the Wairarapa.

They had both been impressed by the 16th and 17th century gardens in Italy and had observed that their tranquillity was achieved through the repetition of planting themes, straight lines, water and symmetry.

A formally planted beech and lime forest surrounds a 56m-long reflecting pool. Immaculately clipped box hedges and hornbeam abound, and the garden captures many moods throughout the year.

Melanie designed the garden not only to be viewed from the house, room by room, and from an upstairs terrace, but also to entice you to walk and explore. In the past, people entertained themselves within the confines of home and garden. This was John and Melanie's aim - to make a space they didn't feel the need to leave.

This garden may be visited by appointment only, and we will endeavour to arrange one should you like to visit whilst in New Zealand.
